Born 1978 into a Hindi film family — her half-sister is Nagma — and on screen since Doli Saja Ke Rakhna (1997), but it is Tamil cinema she belongs to: Kushi, Kaakha Kaakha, Perazhagan, Chandramukhi, Mozhi. She stopped acting after marrying Suriya in 2006 and came back nine years later with 36 Vayadhinile (2015), since when the parts have got harder and plainer rather than softer. Her clothes have gone the same way. Off screen she dresses in one long uninterrupted colour more often than not — a saree, a column, a coat over trousers — with the detail kept to a single drape and the jewellery stacked on one wrist. It is a wardrobe built on line rather than on ornament, which is why it copies well.
