Colour-block choli, ruffle straps, cream kasavu pavadai with a multicolour patchwork border
This is not a film costume. It is an Onam outfit worn by a small child in a reel posted to Instagram on 7 August 2026, and the reason it is on this site is that it solves a problem most kids' festival wear does not: it is unmistakably Kerala kasavu, and it is not beige.
It is one garment in two parts, and it is worth looking at closely.
The choli is sleeveless with a square neck, cut in colour-block panels of handloom cotton rather than printed — ochre-mustard on the left, a strong cobalt blue across the centre, teal-green at the right, with a single small gold zari butta woven into the blue. You can see the slub in the weave at close range. A thin gold zari band closes the seam at the waist.
The straps are the whole outfit. Instead of a plain shoulder strap there are layered ruffles in magenta, hot pink, cobalt, teal and purple, stacked so they sit up off the shoulder. Nothing else in the outfit is doing anything clever; those straps are.
The pavadai is cream-white kasavu cotton, box-pleated at the waist and full to the floor, tied with a magenta cord. Around the hem runs a wide multicolour patchwork border — magenta, mustard, green, pink and blue rectangles, several carrying their own gold zari buttas, sitting above a broad gold kasavu band at the very bottom. It is patchwork in the literal sense: separate woven pieces joined, not a printed panel. That border is what makes the outfit, and it is also the thing that turns out to be impossible to buy.
