The blue-bloom Forever New midi

This one is not a costume. It is what Shalini Ajith wore to a family baby shower in August 2026 — a private occasion, photographed against a "little sunshine on the way" backdrop — and it is one garment doing all of the work.

For once we can name the real thing. It is the Forever New "Eve Petite Seam Detail Midi Dress", and we are naming it because it is checkable rather than inferred: the brand's own product photography lines up with the photographs detail for detail, and the seller's product data confirms the price. It listed at ₹3,920, down from ₹9,800. It is also, at the time of writing, sold out in every one of its seven sizes, and it is gone from Forever New's own India site too — the "seam detail" line survives in other colours, but not in this print. So the pieces below are lookalikes, and each one says where it differs.

The dress is a cream, almost ivory, sheer organza-weight cloth, and the print is the reason it reads the way it does: large watercolour blooms in a soft cornflower blue, spaced far apart rather than repeated close, with thin ochre and olive leaf sprigs drifting between them. There is a lot of empty cream between flowers. That sparseness is what separates it from the ditsy florals the high street is full of, and it is the single hardest thing to match.

The cut is quieter than the print. A plain round neck, no collar and no placket. A short batwing sleeve that is cut in one with the body, so it falls in a soft fold at the upper arm rather than gathering into a cuff. Down the front of the bodice run vertical pin-tuck seams — the "seam detail" the dress is named for — which pull the waist in without a belt and then release into a full, gathered midi skirt. It is worn loose and unbelted, and the sheer cloth moves independently of the lining underneath.

On her feet are plain cream round-toe ballet flats — flat or very nearly, no point, no embellishment. Comfortable shoes for a long afternoon indoors, and the right call under a skirt this full.

One thing is deliberately missing from the list. She wears a fine gold chain with a small round pendant, clear enough to see and never clear enough to describe properly, so it is not listed. Guessing at a piece of someone's own jewellery is the fastest way to get a page like this wrong.

A note on the pictures: this look survives as two photographs, not video. The widely shared clip that carries them also contains two other women modelling the same dress, and neither of them is Shalini — every frame on this page is cut from the two photographs of her and from nothing else.
