The Ponvandu Kanjivaram

This one is not a costume, and there is no film. It is what Sindhu Krishna wore to a function, in photographs that went round in October 2026 — a chandelier-lit stage, a seated portrait beside Krishna Kumar, a getting-ready shot from her make-up artist. None of them says what the occasion was, so neither do we.

The saree is not a mystery, though. It is the same design as Silkyway Boutique's "Ponvand Kanjivaram Bridal Saree" — Silkyway is a Thiruvananthapuram saree house, and the listing on its own store is ₹75,000 and in stock. "Ponvandu" is the golden-beetle colour the weavers name it after, and the listing describes zari lines running through the body. Every visible detail matches: the body, the border, the selvedge, the pallu. Silkyway does not say she bought hers there, so we call it the same design rather than her receipt.

What you are looking at. An olive-gold silk body — mustard in shade, beetle-green in the sheen — run through with fine vertical zari lines. A wide, plain gold zari border edged in deep wine, and a thin bottle-green selvedge right at the edge. The pallu is wine, barred with broad gold bands, finished with wine tassels.

Under it, an aubergine-wine silk blouse with elbow sleeves, the saree's own gold border sewn round each sleeve with the green selvedge as the hem, and green piping at the neck. Around it, a long gold necklace of leaf-shaped links over a fine chain with a small pendant, gold jhumkas, a red bindi and a heavy fall of jasmine.

What we are leaving off. The leaf-link necklace — nothing on the high street came close enough to put on a card. A bronze-looking shot in a hotel corridor is the same saree under warm light, not a second outfit.
