Malayalam cinema’s defining leading man, on screen since the 1970s and across more than four hundred films in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and English. Three National Film Awards for Best Actor, and a Padma Shri in 1998. What makes him worth a page here is separate from any of that: at seventy-plus he dresses louder and younger than almost anyone half his age — printed shirts, real colour, sunglasses, nothing apologetic — and the printed shirt in particular gets copied every time he steps out in one.
